Twenty-four year old Robyn was born and raised in rural Canterdale. Her mother, Mel, is a bored, vicious gossip and Robyn has five siblings, each with a different father. Leaving home and scandal behind her at fifteen, Robyn has lived in a Wellington flat ever since, sharing an old villa with three female students. She's just broken off an intense affair with 18-year-old Nigel, another student.

Nigel is so deeply in love with Robyn he is prepared to let her go - but when she begins a relationship with his older brother Hal, the complex aspects of Nigel's character eventually lead to a series of tragedies. At first Robyn is afraid for him - then she becomes afraid of him. Robyn's world begins to unravel when the body of a new-born baby blocks the drain of the old villa, and the mother cannot be traced.

This is a sharply written, tense psychological drama, with a very unexpected plot twist. While the story is dark, it is nonetheless a compelling read, with complex layering of emotional issues and ideas by a skillful and experienced author.
