At heart, Dexter is the perfect gentlemen: he has a shy girlfriend and seems to lead a quiet, normal life bordering on the mundane. Despite the fact that he can't stand the sight of blood, he works as a blood-spatter analyst for the Miami police. But Dexter also has a secret hobby: he is an accomplished serial killer. So far, he's killed 36 people and has never been caught because he knows exactly how to hide the evidence. And whilst that may lead some people to assume he's not such a nice guy, he tempers his insatiable hunger for brutality by only killing the bad guys.

However, Dexter's well-organised life is suddenly disrupted when a second, much more visible serial killer appears in Miami. Intrigued that the other killer favours a style similar to his own, Dexter soon realises that the mysterious new arrival is not simply invading his turf but offering him a direct invitation to 'come out and play'...

Dexter series
We have all watched the TV series... that absolutely loveable blood splatter analyst who also just so happens to be a serial killer The books are definitely worth checking out. There is a reason why people always say the books are better than the movie/ tv series once again this proves to be true. The plot is a little different to the one in the show, so don't fret You have not seen it all before. I loved them. Reviewed by 30ti

A dark but humerous novel
I was also a fan of the show before I read the book, so if you love the show you won't be dissapointed. Although a lot of the book is similar there are some crazy twists that make it different and in some ways more interesting than the TV series. Seeing the world from the eyes of a sociopathic serial killer makes for interesting reading!!

Darkly Dreaming Dexter
I was a fan of the show before I read this book, however the book surpassed the show within the first 50 pages. Aside from going a little overboard on aliteration every now and then the story was well constructed and Dexter was far darker and colder then he was in the show. You get the opinion that the author not only undertands serial killers but is writing as if he is telling his own story. Fantastic pacing of the story means that there are no sections which feel like wading through mud. Overall, couldn't put the book down and can't wait to read the next ones.
