Late one night, a young girl running away from home tumbled impulsively off a coach in the cathedral city of Eyot, where she knew no one. Eight years later, Quinta is well established there, with a new identity. She has achieved an orderly life, balancing the demands of her daughter, her work as a violin maker, and the composer she lives with - until the unexpected arrival in Eyot of Lydia Holbeck, a friend from the past.
As Lydia draws Quinta out of her safe, careful ways, the cathedral community around them begins to ferment with scandal.
