Dot and Mavis are two young girls with powerful imaginations and strong bonds of friendship. As the novel unfolds we come to know their mothers and grandmothers and, through them, to understand the trials that have beset these three generations of women as well as the bonds of love, forged in adversity, that bind them. It is a story of mothers and daughters and an intimate examination of love in all its forms.
