Driver takes us on a new journey with Detective John Tanner, a veteran police detective who is charming, witty and focused. Tanner joined the force at 21, after three years racing stock cars. He could have had a professional career but a keen sense of justice made him seek out a job where he could make a difference. Tanner is undoubtedly good at his job, with a file full of convictions, successful cases and dangerous undercover work. However, he has a tendency to see the glass as half empty, focusing on the mistakes he has made and the crooks who got away. He's enormously respected by his colleagues, though a bit of a maverick; some of them have the feeling that his obsessive working nature makes him a danger to himself and to others. To Tanner, that's exactly why he's a damn good cop.
