1898 - Morland Place, the ancient Yorkshire home of the Morland family, is being restored to its former glory by Teddy Morland, master of the house. With his sister Henrietta and her family filling the house with life, and with Henrietta's daughter Lizzie giving birth to her first child, renewal and hope are everywhere.
But on the brink of the new century, Victorian England is under threat. Europe is dividing into armed camps, while at home, socialism and the suffragette movement challenge traditional values and hint at upheavals to come.
Conflict, too, rears its head. The Boers threaten to come to arms, and when diplomacy fails England has no choice but to go to war. Among the volunteers is Bertie, Teddy's nephew and Henrietta's much loved 'extra son'.
