The 1968 election saw the return of the Republican party to the White House and major changes in the political landscape following one of the most contentious and unpredictable contests in American History. From President Lyndon Johnson's exit following Eugene McCarthy's win in New Hampshire, to the murders of Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King, Jr., and to the Chicago Democratic Convention, it all lives again in this recounting of that explosive year. Vietnam was the main issue but the civil rights struggle played a significant role, as well as George Wallace, who captured an astounding 13 percent of the vote. The author interviewed some 35 politicians and key players for this book, and most of these interviews are previously unpublished.
