Elizabeth Aidallbery has lost her husband, her lover, and most crucially, her sense of self. Returning from hospital after a serious operation, she recuperates, fearing who or what she might lose next.

There's 17-year-old Joanna, the eldest of her three daughters, who leaves home to settle in a hippie commune - a place rumoured to be rife with drug taking. And there's Henry, Elizabeth's childhood sweetheart, who seems unable to settle into the adult world.

And, of course, there is Elizabeth herself who must decide what kind of life she will have next . . .
