Jules Gabriel Verne (1828–1905) is the author of some of the world’s most famous books, including Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea and Around the World in Eighty Days. He has the rare distinction of being the second most translated author in history, right between William Shakespeare and Agatha Christie. In spite of – or perhaps because of – his immense popularity, his work has sometimes been dismissed outside of France and Europe as mere genre fiction, unworthy of serious study. Since his death, however, his reputation has undergone a great change.
