Emily and her grandmother are working hard on making a new patchwork counterpane for Emily's bed. Patches of red, green, gold and several sorts of blue combine to make the quilt exceptionally beautiful. But they run out of material for the patches and Grandma sends Emily to the village market to buy more cloth- `an ell of crash tussore'- from Miss Tulliver`s stall. Emily`s journey to market- which one would expect to be an everyday affair- becomes a magical adventure. She is accompanied by a butterfly, kittens and birds but most important is the delivery boy who saves the day when Miss Tulliver cannot be found.
