Born Arnold George Dorsey in Madras, India, Engelbert had a long struggle to make his mark in show business. After his first attempts at entertaining while in the army in Germany, after his initial failure as Gerry Dorsey, he found a manager who insisted he change his name, giving him a second shot at fame and finally his break-through via an appearance on TV's Sunday Night At The London Palladium.
His single 'Release Me' sold 2.5 million copies in two and a half weeks. Soon he was working alongside the greats - from The Beatles and Jimi Hendrix, to Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jnr.
