The Great War changed the ways that China and the UK's Chinese population were perceived and represented in the British press, popular fiction and on the stage. The period spawned the Thomas Burke's Limehouse novels and Sax Rohmer's notorious Dr. Fu Manchu. The sinophobic portrayal of the Chinese diaspora, then centralized in the Limehouse Chinatown, came just as China was trying desperately to assert its image globally as a modern nation.
