ENON, a small Massachusetts town with a long history (and also the town in which Tinkers takes place), centres around Charles Washington Crosby. Charlie's 14 year old daughter Kate has died in a biking accident and he has been struggling with her loss and descending into despair following the dissolution of his marriage. Charlie's wife left him only weeks after Kate died, and he now ekes out a solitary existence of theft, drugs, and alcohol, and an almost hallucinogenic form of grief and remembrance. As he wanders around the town, Kate becomes a presence, along with the many of the town's other residents, living and dead, with Enon itself a vibrant character.
