Eugene Onegin, an urbane and sophisticated young man, is less than thrilled with his inheritance of a country estate. While on a visit there he meets Tatyana, who declares her love for him. Shocked by her directness, Onegin cruelly rejects her; but when he learns that his friend Lensky is in love with Olga, Tatyana's beautiful sister, he sets out to provoke Lensky's anger and jealousy. This done,he agrees to fight a duel, more to relieve his boredom than to avenge his honour.
The ensuing tragedy of death and exile, of love lost and agonising remorse is one of the most influential works of Russian literature.
