This book is a sustained demystificaton of middle-class hypocrisy which outraged contemporary France, inciting scandal and court cases against Zola (1840-1902). It is still regarded very much as a sexy, adult tale of adultery and sustained infidelity. In its stripping away of the facades of middle-class life, 'Pot-Bouille' exists as a counterpart to Zola's 'L-Assommoir', which revealed the harsh reality of working-class life.
The only modern English translation of what is one of the great comic novels of the nineteenth century.
