The arrival of Farmer Lodge's young bride causes quite a stir amongst the villagers of Holmstoke. But for Rhoda Brook, the mother of Lodge's child, curiosity breeds obsession and, one night, she is taunted by a vision of Gertrude, revelling in her new status. Summoning all her strength, Rhoda drives the spectre away, but her triumph is shortlived and with increasing horror she witnesses the sinister effects of a malevolent force nothing can defeat.
'The Withered Arm' is one of Hardy's famous 'Wessex Tales', a collection inspired, like his poetry, by the Dorset rural life and traditions he knew so well.
The only edition available, with introduction and chronology of Hardy's life and times.
