Translated by G S Conway and revised with new translations by Richard Stoneman.
Pindar's poems of praise for the victors in the great games of Greece are celebrations of human excellence, uncompromising in their insistence on the best and the need of divine grace for true human achievement. They present the competitive spirit of ancient Greece as part of a profound and complex world view. Less well known are Pindar's religious hymns, paeans and dithryambs, which celebrate the varied gods and heroes of Greece in uniquely heartfelt expressions of devotion to the divine.
Here for the first time in one volume are translations of all Pindar's poems and many of those that have survived only in fragmentary form.
A unique edition, with introduction, notes, selected criticism, maps, glossary and chronology of Pindar's life and times.
