Extreme Ironing is the latest adrenalin sport; it combines the thrills of an extreme outdoor activity with the satisfaction of a well-pressed shirt. It involves ironing items of laundry in remote, inhospitable, dangerous or unusual locations. It usually also involves the discipline of another extreme sport such as rock climbing, mountaineering, canoeing, scuba diving or surfing.
Participants of the sport are known as ironists and pride themselves on returning to work on Monday morning with a freshly-ironed shirt, which was pressed at the weekend whilst dangling from a rock face or riding the rapids.
The idea was first thought of by Steam in 1997, then in 2000 a team of enthusiastic Germans, led by Hot Crease, took the sport to Germany and shortly afterwards organised the world championships in 2002. Since then thousands more have taken ironing outside, under the sky, where it belongs.
Written by the sport's founder, this book, illustrated throughout with breathtaking photographs, is a guide to equipment and clothing; a description of the different styles of extreme ironing and an overview of worldwide developments.
