Every year the death toll on Mount Everest's perilous slopes rises. For every six mountaineers who make it to the top, one will die. Bear Grylls is the youngest British climber to reach the summit and return alive.
This feat is made all the more remarkable by the fact that only two years earlier, whilst serving in the British Army, Grylls broke his back in a free-fall parachuting accident in Southern Africa. Having spent months in military rehabilitation, he made a determined recovery to face the severity of Everest.
Bear endured over seventy days on Everest's South-East face and only narrowly avoided death when he fell into a crevasse at 19,000 ft. At the age of twenty-three, he overcame the extreme weather conditions and months of limited sleep to stand on top of the world's highest mountain.
