Strange bedfelow, shocking revelations, reputations in ruins - but cause enough to kill?
There was nothing special about San Diego detective Robbie Brownlow until he plunged six storeys from a burning hotel. He was left with broken bones, a large scar, and synethesia – a condition where words take on shapes and colours that indicate the speaker's emotions.
Murder victim Gus Asplundh had relied on more sophisticated methods to uncover people's secrets. Hired to investigate rumours linking high-ranking city employees with an elite prostitution ring, he had turned to a Spook Valley security outfit whose pioneering software could detect hidden relationships. Using this software, Robbie learns that the La Jolla madam's clientele includes some of the richest and most powerful men in San Diego – city fathers, casino bosses, sports-team owners and politicians.
And a killer with everything to lose should Robbie be allowed to finish his investigation.
