Paul Bhattacharjee and Sudha Bhuchar read Anita Desai's wonderfully subtle appraisal of two contrasting family lives spread over two continents. Two continents, two ways of life.
Uma lives in India. Overshadowed by her prettier, younger sister Aruna, who has made a good marriage, and by her brother Arun, who has escaped to America. Uma is surrounded by overbearing parents, aunts and cousins and moves from day to day in the sluggish warmth and tradition of a close-knit Indian family, stifled and unable to escape.
Arun has swapped this smothering cosiness for the freedom of Massachusetts. Yet for all its liberty and equality, the American lifestyle proves bewildering and terrifying for the young Indian student so many miles from home.
