Kelly Howell lives a solitary if occasionally wild life in Suffolk where she drives a taxi. She might feel like a failure, but at least it's an honest and regular job. Into her life comes Dexter - a limping Californian, young, enigmatic, calling from the station and demanding to be driven around to the local tourist sights.
Kelly is used to people making demands of her - first her father, a famous architect, then his devoted students, who probed her for everything she knew about the great man. But this Californian is different: he seems interested in her, not her father, and, come to that, in castles on the ground rather than those in the air. But there is something he is not telling her, not even in bed, and that something is leading her to California . . .
