Testimony to the Great War.
The First World War dominated Europe for four years. More than eight million died, and countless others were wounded in the terrible series of offensives and counter-offensives. Today, more than eighty years after the cease-fire, the French and Belgian countryside still bears the scars of those battles. Dozens of cemeteries and memorials commemorate those who died and the crumbling remains of fortifications and trenches testify to the wretchedness and destruction of the war.
This evocative history is beautifully illustrated with a combination of pictures and photographs from before the war, during the war, and photographs showing the battlefields as they are today. John Foley's serene photographs of the present day landscape contrast starkly with the wartime pictures to create a vivid and moving record of the war.
