In the Church of England, the conference-goer's lot is rarely a comfortable one. But, to Archdeacon Richard Treadwell, arriving at Bolly's Jolly Holiday Home feels akin to arriving in hell. Conference organiser Harold Worsted is having an even more miserable weekend, doing all the work and taking all the blame - and in this conference, with its chilly chalets and faction-riden delegates, there's a lot of blame being handed out, as deacon Theodora Braithwaite quickly surmises.
What, she wonders, besides discontent, might unite the clergy and laity? Clearly not The Millennium Message, the conference's theme. An unusual speaker, a Fool calling himself Josh the Jester and licensed by the Church to mirror back some home truths, might possibly provoke some degree of consensus? His reputation, albeit eccentric, is one of wise innocence and, uniquely, no one seems to have a bad word to say about him. So when Josh is found dead, bundled into a laundrette washing machine, the question on everyone's lips is, who could possibly want to kill such a blameless priest?
