The football match between England and Germany on No Man's Land to commemorate the Christmas truce on the Western front in 1914 has gone down in Great War legend.
But who were the men who took part and how did the game come about? All this and more is revealed in this astounding new work. Also named are two footballers and soldiers, one Saxon and one Scottish, who took part in the game.
The Scottish soldier was captain of the regimental football team before and after the war. He also played a few games for a club in the second division of the Scottish league in 1912. He was awarded the Military Medal in 1918 and he survived the war.
The German soldier played for an amateur club in his home town before the war. He was killed in 1916 and buried in France.
