This has long been considered the most significant novel about life in an Australian penal colony. It is the story of Rufus Dawes sentenced to transportation for a murder he did not commit. Falsely convicted of involvement in a mutiny, he is sent to Macquarie Harbour in Van Diemen's Land, and later to Port Arthur and Norfolk Island, where along with the other convicts he is subjected to all manner of brutality. Despite its deep pessimism and stretches of melodrama, the novel retains its narrative and emotional power.
