Derek "Vader" Brown has a a big personality and a huge heart. He has been taking care of his mother since she was hurt in a car accident when he was 14. Now he needs more money to hire home-care for her. When he decides to go out for the Captain job at the firehouse, he finds that life is getting in the way. Vader's on-again-off-again girlfriend Cherie Harper is hiding something from him. She continually turns to him only to then push him away.
Cherie left Arkansas at the age of 17 after being forced into an arranged marriage, and she has been living in fear ever since. When her younger sister Gracie shows up in town, Cherie fears that her past may finally catch up with her. Cherie must find a way to protect herself and her sister, but she is going to have a difficult time doing that while Vader is trying to find a way into her heart.
