Bob Dwyer is one of rugby union’s signature figures. He is known as the football professor, rugby revolutionary and architect of the Wallabies’ first World Cup victory.
In 1991 he guided the national team to win the William Webb Ellis Cup in what was universally acclaimed as a victory for players, fans and the game itself. His journey to world cup glory began as a player and coach with Sydney’s Randwick Club. He was elected to coach Australia in 1982, was replaced by Alan Jones in 1983 and returned to Randwick to coach from 1984 to 1988 during which time the side played in five grand finals, winning three. From 1988 to the end of the 1995 season Dwyer again coached the Wallabies, winning the 1991 World Cup and exiting in the quarter finals of the 1995 tournament. He then coached with success in Britain and France before being appointed NSW Waratahs coach in the Super 12 championship from 2001 to 2003. On his retirement he was the incumbent coach of the game’s most elite company, the famous Barbarians. Along the way Bob Dwyer revolutionised rugby by bringing a more specialised and professional approach to the craft. His 1991 World Cup team was not only the best-prepared Australian side to that time but the blue-print for the way teams would be organised in the professional era.
