Paul Gauguin (1848–1903) was the initiator of the École de Pont-Aven painting school and one of the most important post-impressionist painters. The creation of new aesthetic criteria led him first to Brittany, then to the Pacific Islands, where he went in search of a lost paradise and untouched nature. He has had a significant influence on modern painting.
