A Biography of New Hollywood

Born into a working class Jewish Brooklyn family, Geffen started work in the fabled William Morris mailroom, by falsely claiming to have graduated from UCLA. Before he was twenty-five he had earned his first $1,000,000 launching his own record label, Asylum, which featured Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young; the Byrds; and Linda Rondstadt. One year later he sold out to Warner Communications for $7,000,000.

The music world was in fast orbit, and Geffen was at its centre. But he moved on to produce films like "Beetlejuice" and also backed Broadway musicals like "Cats" and "Miss Saigon".

But while his professional life has been a succession of successes, he has not been so lucky in love. Before he came out as a bisexual, Geffen was sporadically linked with a number of famous women, including a very stormy relationship with Cher.

Recently, David Geffen teamed up with Spielberg and Katzenberg to create DreamWorks with its ambitions state-of-the-art digital studio and entertainment and technology campus. It could be argued that David Geffen's career is only just beginning!
