Featuring essays, archival documents, photographs, and commissioned line drawings, this in-depth account chronicles one of Southeast Asia's most effective and sustained efforts in heritage-based urban regeneration. A decade after the launch of a landmark collaboration between the Aga Khan Trust for Culture and Think City-a Malaysian organization focused on community-led urban revitalization-this book captures how long-term planning, civic engagement, and cultural stewardship have helped transform the historic port of George Town into a model of socially grounded development. Unlike many regional centers dramatically reshaped by rapid modernization, Penang stands apart for preserving its layered architectural fabric and multicultural identity. That legacy has become the foundation for a different kind of growth-one rooted in continuity, inclusion, and place-based revitalization. Drawing on the insights and experiences of leading practitioners and policymakers involved in this decade-long effort, the book highlights a wide range of initiatives-from the adaptive reuse of Fort Cornwallis and the restoration of heritage buildings using traditional techniques to the redesign of public parks and laneways, and the creation of cultural and vocational training hubs. Essential for architects, planners, and students of conservation, this richly detailed volume offers a compelling model for how cities can leverage heritage to shape a more inclusive and resilient urban future. AUTHORS: Neil Khor is Advisor to the Mayor of Kuala Lumpur; he was formerly Chief of Staff of UN-Habitat (2019-2024). An historian, he specializes in the social history of Penang, Malaysia.
