Einstein, Relativity and the Expanding Universe.
In February 1998 astronomers made a startling announcement on the nature of our universe. Based on observations of huge supernova explosions, the astronomers concluded that the universe was expanding at an ever increasing rate. The disturbing implication was that the universe was fated to expand and fade away, rather than endlessly renew itself as most scientists had hoped.
What was the explanation for the unprecedented new findings? There seemed to be a mysterious force at work in the universe - something which physicists call a negative pressure or a vacuum energy was counteracting the force of gravity and pushing away the galaxies.
To find a solution physicists were drawn back to Einstein, and his field equation for gravitation. Was an old factor in the equations, a term later written out of the equation, in fact the answer? Was "Einstein's greatest blunder" the secret element in God's Equation?
