A modern Australian creation myth where a great whale becomes lonely, searching for his family. Through a process of transformation he becomes one with the land and the
Kiama blowhole is born.
Every year, the great rock whale is reunited with his family as they pass on their annual migration to warmer waters.
The Kiama Blowhole is an international tourist attraction and one of the first features mentioned by an European in the 18th century.
Aboriginal people of the Illawarra discovered the blowhole thousands of years before European settlement and it was a distinctive feature in their lives. The spray made by the sea as it is forced through a narrow, cave-like opening is the spray of the great rock whale.
