In the 3rd Battalion of the British Army's Parachute Regiment (3 Para ), the Green Eyed Boys were a clique of junior soldiers who developed their own fantasy culture of aggressive elitism. After years of peace, they longed for an opportunity to prove their worth outside the frustrating confines of Northern Ireland and Salisbury Plain. That chance came in April 1982 when Argentina invaded the Falkland Islands.
On the night of 11/12 June the battalion began its assault on Mount Longdon. In a sustained feat of courage and tenacity, 3 Para achieved its objectives at the price of losing nearly a quarter of its fighting strength killed or wounded. But there was a darker side to the heroism of the Paras , which resulted in a full scale, if inconclusive, war crimes investigation.
Green-Eyed Boys, based entirely on eyewitness interviews and primary sources, reveals fully for the first time what actually happened during and immediately after that horrific night-time battle.
