Megwin is Green Mantle, protector of all living things and member of the powerful college of the Mantles. She travels through the five kingdoms with her horse and fox and the power of the mantles to protect her, restoring the balance of nature and unravelling the mystery of a deadly curse.
This is the second chronicle of the Mantles (after 'Silver Mantle') but is a stand-alone book as well. Megwin has advanced to the Green Mantle, the green standing for the earth and all that lives and flourishes there.
After the battles, the land was sick and wasted, until Green Mantle's magic arts restored the meadows, heaths and woodlands. Megwin is Green Mantle and despite her youth and headstrong nature, she has powers that alarm some of the older Mantles.
Feeling unable to return to the Talarin, the citadel of the Mantles, she travels the countryside, living with wild creatures and secretly nursing her own private sadness. A chance meeting with a family of gypsies takes her to the salt marshes of the estuary, where she learns of dark secrets from her own past.
In the sand-drift winds of the shore, there is the sadness of death and the joy of friendship. She encounters strange and ancient powers, unravels the mystery of a deadly curse and confronts her private nemesis.
