In the early stages of the Second World War, a British engineer and arms expert holds secret talks with the Turkish government. Shaken by an attempt on his life, he departs for home on an Italian freighter, with the knowledge that Nazi assassins aim to prevent his return. Friend and foe become quickly indistinguishable as he grapples to trust those around him should he suspect the cabaret dancer? The German doctor? The unkempt trader?
