On October 19th, 1927, Francis Birtles set off from Australia House in London.
He arrived in Melbourne nine months later having travelled across Europe to Greece, through the Middle East, across Asia to Malaysia then from Darwin to Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne, arriving in July 1948.
Much of this remarkable journey was where no other vehicle had ever been - on mountain tracks, across deserts, through jungles - with only makeshift repairs available to him.
