In the latter part of World War II David Sutherland was a key figure in Britain's Special Air Service, an elite commando-like unit. The SAS operated in North Africa, the Mediterranean, and in the final campaign in Europe. SAS officers made many contacts among local resistance leaders and learned much about the countries in which they were operating.
