Darian Firkin is receiving some of the highest honours in Valdemar: he has been made a Knight of Valdemar and a Clanbrother; he has passed all the tests and become a Master Mage. And he is about to become head of a new community, the Vale of k'Valdemar, located near his old home of Errold's Grove.
Despite all this, life for Darian is not completely satisfactory. The woman he loves, the Healer Keisha Alder, repeatedly refuses to wed him. And his romantic problem is not the only one plaguing Darian; he is haunted by the loss of his parents, who vanished when his childhood home was attacked all those years ago.
Even if he knew that his beloved parents were, in fact, alive - and even if he knew where they were - would it be worth risking his life and the lives of his companions to chase what could be little more than a dream?
