Robbie Heath, a physiotherapist, leaves England to
escape the chaos and intensity of her family - her sister
Laura, a nightclub singer, and their mother Esther - bound together by their inability to speak of the secrets of the girl's childhood.
Yet even at Janvier in the deep south of Louisiana, Robbie is assailed by demons from her past and when Laura and Esther come to visit they are all forced to face their past with cataclysmic consequences.
