Maggie is a brash, unapologetic working class woman with a heart-breaking secret and no real family to call her own. She never set out to be a foster mum, but when a young, mixed race child is pulled from the rubble of a bombed out house and no one else is willing to help, Maggie agrees to take her in. From that small beginning she starts to develop a reputation as someone who will take in any child no matter what their circumstance, nor the colour of their skin.
But the more Maggie does, the more hardship she sees, especially as the Blitz rumbles on, leaving more and more children in need of a place to call home...
