A brilliant, obsessive man, Alex Carey had been too preoccupied with causes to spend much time with his family, but while Gabrielle was overseas, their correspondence brought them close for the first time. It was Alex - the committed humanist and atheist - who understood her interest in Catholicism and native Indian religion; Alex who inspired her decision to settle in a Third World country.
After the birth of her daughter Gabrielle travelled again: this time to return to Australia to see her family. The day before she arrived, Alex Carey committed suicide.
