This book will critically examine the struggle for equality of citizenship by Indian Muslims—the largest religious minority in the world’s largest democracy. The essays in this edited volume examine the economic, social and political developments in India and their impact on Indian Muslims and discuss and contextualize welfare initiatives and policy responses after the Sachar Committee Report of 2006, which sparked widespread awareness of socioeconomic disparity and exclusion of religious minorities in India, especially the Muslims. The Sachar Report was the first comprehensive evaluation of policies for minorities. Indian Muslims assesses existing initiatives, policy promises, and as-yet unaddressed needs, predicated on India’s constitutional promises of ‘equal opportunity’ for citizens of a secular democracy.
