The collections of the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian constitute one of the largest and most comprehensive assemblages of Native American material culture in the world. They span the Western Hemisphere, representing Native cultures from the tip of Tierra del Fuego to the arctic tundra, and ranging in time from 9000 B.C. to the present.
The "Infinity of Nations" exhibit is a survey of the museum's entire collection, due to open at the Heye Center in New York in October 2010. It will be on view for ten years. This is the official book accompanying the exhibit, and includes more than two hundred stunning full-color photographs of the objects in this incredible collection. The text offers an overview of the Native cultures of the Americas and an introduction to the history and geography of each region, as well as an unparalleled look at the museum's archaeological, ethnographic, and contemporary art collections. Dozens of cultural anthropologists, archaeologists, and Native scholars are contributing, including Arthur Amiotte (Oglala Lakota), Christian Feest, Bill Holm, David W. Penney, and Gaylord Torrence.
