This easy-to-use fold-out chart depicts some of the insect families and species most commonly encountered in Australia. Each has at least one photo and some facts about the insect, including its length, lifestyle, habits, habitat and geographical distribution. Some are active year-round, while other only for certain periods usually in spring and summer, although these can be highly variable across Australia for the same species depending on locations. Because there are known to be more than 70,000 insect species in Australia, with many awaiting official description, the focus is on some of the more easily encountered and distinctive families and species, and sometime on the big and spectacular! For reason of space, only the adults are shown, but most species have fascinating lifecycles involving eggs, larvae and often various stages of instars (immature insects).
