Discovering the Classic Interiors of London.
This forms a characterful photographic record of the classic interiors of one of the world's foremost cities. A wealth of surprising interiors lie hidden behind familiar and sometimes unprepossessing exteriors; here they are gloriously uncovered by a specialist architectural historian and renowned photographer. For example, the atmosphere of Cooke's eel and pie shop, on the one hand, and the eccentric Egyptian-style Mason's temple within the Great Eastern Hotel, on the other, are captured superbly.
The specially commissioned photographs by Peter Aprahamian - of gentlemen's clubs, hotels, restaurants, shops, pubs, hospitals and town houses - are accompanied by short descriptive texts, uncovering the key features of design and architectural interest. Previously unphotographed interiors, such as the Art Deco barber shop in the basement of Austin Reed, are revealed, as are many perfectly intact ones, such as James Smith's umbrella shop in Bloomsbury and the delightful Victorian drawing room of the Linley Sambourne house in Kensington.
'Inside London' presents the treasure-trove of interior decoration lying within the British capital.
