Insider Art

This book showcases the artwork produced by 'insiders' - prisoners and ex-inmates of Her Majesty's Prison Service. It begins with an essay on the principle of teaching art in prisons, and how it can help with rehabilitation. Many of the prisoners and ex-inmates are profiled in depth through both words and images, talking about the difference art has made to their lives. This is followed by a gallery of artwork produced by prisoners from all over the UK, set out in art catalogue style, often accompanied by anecdotes and personal stories which add meaning to the work. This is a fascinating book which allows an understanding of how prisoners react to or deal with difficult issues and situations through art, offering a glimpse into their world.
