Forced out of the Los Angeles Times amid the latest budget cuts, newspaperman Jack McEvoy decides to go out with a bang, using his final days at the paper to write the definitive murder story of his career.

He focuses on Alonzo Winslow, a 16-year-old drug dealer in jail after confessing to a brutal murder. But as he delves into the story, Jack realises that Winslow's so-called confession is bogus. The kid might actually be innocent.

Jack is soon running with his biggest story since The Poet made his career years ago. He is tracking a killer who operates completely below police radar - and with perfect knowledge of any move against him. Including Jack's.

Untitled
Well, I'm at the end of a series I've enjoyed. I am devastated there is only two books in this series, Connelly has clearly been working almost entirely on Bosch for a large chunk of his career. And being that Jack McEvoy seems to be based on Connelly himself, it's surprising he hasn't done more with the character. The book ends on a cliffhanger which implies Connelly had at one stage perhaps entertained the idea of continuing writing this series. But at the current rate of publication, we won't see another book in this series until 2022. Continuing their strained but ultimately amicable relationship the inevitably develops into the something more we all knew it was going to be, McEvoy and Walling return in this chilling novel of serial killer fiction. There's all the usual twists and turns of a good thriller, this installment however lacked the awesome twist that really made its predecessor The Poet quite good. I do however, love that Connelly has maintained the subtle links to literature in the crimes, this time around The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is the key to the story and it made me really happy to see it in there! These novels are not high literature, but they are damn good thriller for those days when your brain just needs a good escape. - Samantha (QBD)
