Working with found objects, pages of old books, and trinkets from the five-and-dime, the American artist Joseph Cornell (1903-1972) constructed exquisite boxes exploring such themes as the night sky, the romantic ballet, and the habitat of birds. Here, in pages collaged with cut-out butterflies, postage stamps, buttons, and old engravings, the authors explore Cornell’s life, inspirations, and artistic process. A projects section, based on 6 different themes of Cornell’s boxes, provides ideas and suggest materials for readers to create their own box masterpieces. The book also contains a selected reading list, glossary, list of places to find Cornell’s work, and a materials source guide.
