Annie Payne is a pragmatic New Englander with a charming bluntness, an unexpected eye for art, and a rottweiler named Otto.
She and Otto headed west after a ferocious coastal Maine storm took everything she had. Ever one to plunge in without looking, Annie takes her savings and insurance settlement and opens her own San Francisco art gallery. She becomes captivated by a local artist and when some paintings go up for auction she is determined to get them for her gallery. Annie doesn't get them without a fight and she has to outbid Garvin MacCrae. He wants them because one is of his murdered wife and maybe it holds the key as to who so savagely killed her 5 years ago.
Garvin at first believes Annie can lead him to his wife's killer but he soon realizes that Annie doesn't have a clue what she's up against and just might be the killer's next target. Garvin and Annie become hesitant allies both alarmed at the strong physical attraction between them. When dangerous thing begin happening to those people associated with the murder Gavin and Annie find themselves repeatedly thrown together. They eventually succumb to their passion but will they succumb to their true feeling and love?
